What is thrombocytopenia?
Thrombocytopenia is a condition where you have a lower than normal number of platelets in your blood. Platelets help your blood clot, so low levels increase bleeding and bruising risks.
What symptoms should I watch for?
Common symptoms include easy bruising, prolonged bleeding from cuts, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, and petechiae (tiny red or purple spots on skin). Severe cases may cause internal bleeding.
What causes thrombocytopenia?
Causes include bone marrow disorders, autoimmune diseases, certain medications, infections like HIV or hepatitis, enlarged spleen, or pregnancy-related conditions. Your doctor will determine the underlying cause.
