Bleeding from blood vessels inside the nose that requires evaluation and treatment
Persistent epistaxis may indicate systemic disorders
Find Internal Medicine Specialist SpecialistsEpistaxis is a nosebleed, where blood flows from the nostrils. It can occur suddenly and is usually caused by dry air, nasal trauma, or blood vessel rupture in the nose.
Seek emergency care if bleeding lasts longer than 20 minutes, occurs frequently, follows head trauma, or if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing blood.
Sit upright, pinch your nostrils closed for 10-15 minutes, breathe through your mouth, and apply ice to the bridge of your nose to help stop bleeding.
